Yeah we may be in the grips of one of the deepest recessions in living memory, but once a gadget freak, always a gadget freak. So you can only imagine what my credit card looks like after I read this post about specialist cameras?! Well, actually, I couldn’t afford any of them – they’re just too expensive.

I hate cable clutter. Loathe the stuff. If I could get a wireless display, then I’d have it. And printers, at times the bane of my existence, are one of the main culprits. Just one printer and you end up with at least two cables, strewn over your desk like spaghetti. So when I saw this roundup of 2008’s best wireless printers, then I thought I should share it with you.

Unfortunately I have the displeasure of suffering from internittent internet connectivity. It drives me insane. An hour without the internet feels like an eternity, which in itself is actually quite a sad indictment of my mostly online life. But where does that connection come from? This map of undersea cables answers a lot of those questions.

It’s one of those things: do graphic design, use Photoshop. And spend way too much cash, which in these times isn’t something many of us really want to do. Fortunately there are alternatives that are either free (as in beer) or affordable. If like me you need to regularly edit images and don’t need most of what Photoshop offers, then the trade off between less functionality and more savings is an easy decision to make.

I have a relatively small home office setup, but many of my accessories are wired. I’m thinking of upgrading at least some of them, definitely my printer, to be wireless if possible, but don’t know if I can be bothered dealing with connectivity problems every time I need to reboot my router because the (really crap) internet connection is down. Apparently that’s the least of my concerns, there are plenty of other problems with printers.

Now I’m don’t usually run about screaming the end of the world is nigh, but when someone tells me they’re going to recreate the big bang I get a little nervous – not least of all because I still haven’t finished Lego Indiana Jones and it would be a bummer to cease to exist before I can unlock all the characters.

Today there was a general feeling of relief that those boffins down at the Black Mesa facility (sorry I meant LHC) had turned on the machine without any hiccups. Great, thinks I, but how about we wait until after you’ve smashed sub-atomic particles into each other at almost light-speed before patting ourselves on the backs and lighting up a cheroot.

Not the most exciting post today I’m afraid – just got a laserjet printer and whilst I love the machine (it’s my first laser!) it does urk me a bit that the toner is only half filled. I’ve had loads of recommendations on where to get cheap HP 36A CB436A toner, and I’m hoping I won’t have to worry about it as much as my old inkjet.

OK I admit it, I’m a geek. I love space and robots (but I draw the line at wearing costumes!)

I kinda like the idea of AI and robotics – but progress in the area has been disappointingly slow over the last couple of decades. However this video of a simple bot reconstructing itself after being kicked apart is both fascinating and sinister at the same time!

I love my Mac. I am at home in OS X because things work. So you can understand my frustration when I have to open such excuses for enterprise class software as Adobe’s Acrobat. I personally cannot stand the thing. Software upgrades don’t even install properly! Anyway, if you like me, detest using it, here are some Adobe Acrobat alternatives for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
