Unless you have been living in a feral existence in a cave somewhere you’ll probably have heard something about eco-cities – the sustainable answer to our environmental problems. The thing is though, eco-cities aren’t such a new phenomenom. I would agree with this list of eco-cities and villages that the idea of sustainable living has more to do with the philosophy of life and less to do with Norman Foster’s grand plans.

They’ve even got so much excess electricity available on windy days that they are looking to build out a national grid where electric cars can be charged!

Seems like there is nothing but doom and gloom about shortages in resources, and not just fuel. China is apparently down to 12 days of coal, but that’s because they’re addicted to the stuff. More worryingly, Japan is experiencing food shortages. My tin foil hat is well and truly on.

There’s been a lot of hype around a ‘Texas-sized floating garbage dump’ in the Pacific, but few images and no video. So a couple of enterprising individuals decided to sail straight out to sea for two days and document what they expected to be a floating pile of plastic and discarded goods. The problem is that it’s more like a toxic stew.
